Le Soleil Quebec newspaper… satisfied client!
The implementation of sustainability programs within organizations leads to innovations, which in turn translate into increased profitability. In a spirit of savings and ecoefficiency, Le Soleil considered and then found a solution.
"Color in newspapers can cause ghosting or stain problems. Also, advertisements - which are the main sources of color in newspapers - originate from various sources. Unfortunately, offset printing process and the importance of sending correct files are something that is not understood by all agencies. The entailed difficulties have therefore lead Le Soleil newspaper printing plant, based in Quebec city, to examine the color management and ink optimization solutions available on the market. Our plant tried and tested several software”, explains Gilles Garneau, production manager at Le Soleil. "Before, we had to use up to 400% ink coverage with unprocessed files, when the maximum coverage for a newspaper should target 240% in specific zones. We realized that we were using too much ink. In fact, it is only when we conducted these tests that we noticed we were using less ink with an ink optimizing system. We are now using the Quebec based company TGLC’s PerfXDevice Link and this system compares favorably to other software from international developers. And it is less expensive. Since we started using this system, we have reduced our ink consumption while increasing our print quality", says Garneau. "This system goes hand in hand with our environmental philosophy.
Le Soleil is a daily edition printed on recycled paper. "Everyday we use recycled paper containing between 50 and 80% post consumption fibers. Our paper supplier found a formula that allows us to print a good job on a paper that is not yellow or dirty", states Garneau. His supplier White Birch Papers, also from Quebec city, manufactures paper and cardboard from paper bales which are deinked and remarketed as recycled paper. Le Soleil also promotes newspaper recycling amongst its readership. The supplier’s proximity further contributes to the company’s energy savings.
